What’s Outside the Park

I thought you’d all like to see what’s out in the countryside around the park.  I didn’t take any of Brownsville, it has the usual stores, car dealers, laundromats or lavanderias, though there are a few of differences.

There is a lot of agriculture.  The growing season here is 365 days so they can grow almost anything.  Some furrows are much deeper though as they do not use overhead, walking sprinklers like we do in the Midwest, they flood the fields at ground level with the large collapsable pipes.

It was difficult taking pictures so there aren’t too many.  The speed limit on the US highways is between 55 and 70. The Farm to Market roads have the same speed limits and don’t have much of a shoulder so taking pictures can be dangerous.  I did manage to find some places to take photos though.  I went by fields of corn, red and green cabbage, tomatoes, kale, collards, peppers, to mention a few crops I could identify, and harvested sugarcane.  The fields of sugar cane I saw earlier have been harvested.

I did notice, after I’d rendered the movie, an error. Even though my script said Altamira oriole, I said what I’m used to, Baltimore oriole.  The citrus donated to the park is for the Altamira orioles and other birds that like citrus.

A special thank you to Mary, one of the other hosts, for sharing her information from a visit to the sugar cane grower in the valley.
