Trip East 2023

This spring I went from Tucson, AZ to Middleton, WI and back via Willmer, MN.

I stopped at the Viewpoint on I10 just west of Las Cruses, MN and saw a 20 foot tall road runner and then the Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal, KS on my way to Holy Wisdom Monastery in Middleton, WI.

On the way back from Willmer, MN I drove a part of the Leoss Hills Byway in Iowa.  Then stopped at Pawnee Rock, KS, Dodge City, KS, and the Santa Fe Trail Tracks near Dodge City.  I also stopped at the No Man’s Land Museum on Guymon, OK, Valley of Fire BLM Recreation Area and edge of the Malpais Lava Flow and Fort Stanton in New Mexico.  There is an incorrect date in the narration about Fort Stanton.  It was a home of the developmentally delayed from 1960’s through 1995.  My last stop was at Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument – managed by the Bureau of Land Management, near Las Cruses, NM.

My second day I drove the red roads, the non-Interstate roads. I was very struck by how big, rugged, and beautiful this country is.  Hopefully those fields of corn that were 6-8 inches high in May are now well over knee high and tasseling.

Enjoy.
